How to Measure Windows for Blinds

Windows and Blinds

There are a few questions to consider when installing blinds. How much smaller should blinds be than the window? Do blinds go inside or outside the window frame? In this article, we will tackle these questions and more to help you understand how to properly treat your windows. Read on for all the tips you’ll need to get started.

Inside Mounts

Inside mount blinds are installed inside the window frame. This mounting style is more traditional and is generally the primary installation method for blinds. This is how to best measure them.

First, measure the width inside the window opening at the top, middle and bottom. Note the narrowest of the three width measurements, and round down to the nearest 1/8″.

Next, you’ll need to measure the height inside the window opening from the top of the window opening to the window sill three times – from the left, the centre and the right – and take the longest of the 3 measurements. If you’d like to keep the blind from resting on the sill, take 1/4″ off the height.

Finally, you’ll need to measure the window on the diagonal. If the two diagonal dimensions differ significantly, it may be necessary to order an outside mount for optimal light control and privacy.

Outside Mounts

As the name implies, outside mount blinds are installed outside of the window frame, usually on the trim or above the window. Here’s how you’ll want to measure them.
Since outside window blinds do not have to fit within any parameters, they provide more flexibility when choosing window treatments for your home.

To start, measure the distance from the outermost points you’d like the blind to cover. To minimize light leakage the blind should overlap the window opening by at least 1 1/2″ on each side for a total of 3″ on the entire width.

Next, measure the distance from where the top of the blind will be located to the window sill. The blind should overlap the window opening on the top by at least 1-1/2″.

Windows With Moulding Or Trim

  • These types of windows will require specific considerations when making your measurements. First, measure from the far left edge of the trim to the far right edge of the trim.
  • For wood blinds, faux wood blinds, aluminum blinds, and other products with end mount brackets take a 1/4″ deduction from the measurement to allow room to mount the end brackets onto the trim.
  • Measure the height from the top edge of the window trim to the bottom edge of the window trim or the window sill. To mount the blind above the window trim start your measurement at least 2″ above the top edge of the trim and measure down to the bottom edge of the window trim or window sill.
